Contemporary Sculpture Takes Centre Stage In This Detail Laden Toorak Penthouse

In the heart of Toorak, Melbourne, sits an unlikely masterclass in contemporary architecture, in the form of The Sky Residence. Part of Edition, a collection of three residences developed by architecture and interior design practice Cera Stribley in collaboration with Samuel Property, The Sky Residence spans three storeys and comprises four bedrooms, a home office, and wine storage, and as well as a drop pool on the balcony.

Accessed via a private lift, the expansive space is punctuated by voided ceilings, which extend up to 6.5m in sections, enhancing the sense of scale and contributing an element of dynamism to the property. Multiple living spaces are speckled amongst the top two floors, with the uppermost level featuring an airy open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area that faces out onto a spacious balcony. A 5m stone island blench stretches through the kitchen, bridging the gap between the kitchen and living spaces, subtly lit by an antique patina brass pendant light.

However, the pièce de résistance is inarguably the sculptural helix staircase. Standing at 4.5m high, the staircase is a breathtaking display of modern art, seamlessly extending across each floor, crafted so as to resemble a single piece of material. The statement-making structure is softened by the neutral colour palette that remains consistent across each of the Edition residences.

The lounge area is grounded by a central fireplace, framed by polished plaster that contrasts against the French oak timber flooring. Each room in Edition is expressed in a natural material palette, with weathered brass, timber, and polished plaster providing a sturdy yet muted backdrop, encouraging residents to imbue their lives and personalities into their new home. Interior and exterior are in constant dialogue, facilitated by large windows bordered by dark aluminum frames, allowing for glimpses of the warm grey handmade brick exterior. Outside, subtle landscaping by landscape architect Jack Merlo lines the edge of the terrace, assuaging the exchange between the distinctly contemporary building and its surrounds.

“We apply a holistic approach to every project, one that considers from the outset how we think people will really live within a space,” explained Dom Cerantonio, co-founder of Cera Stribley and lead architect on Edition. “It is always our intention to create timeless, meaningful spaces and we fundamentally believe that good design inspires good living. Edition’s built form is exactly how we intended; there’s strength in the materiality but a softness to the finished product that welcomes the owner to impart their own sense of personality, creating something meaningful beyond the physical attributes.”
