Her Los Angeles home acts as a reflection of the relaxed vibe that propelled Chamberlain to global fame. At age 21, it’s her second home, with Chamberlain selling her West Hollywood house last year in favour of the Beverly Hills abode. Designed over the past year in collaboration with Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman of Proem Studio, the home is replete with eclectic pieces and idiosyncratic design choices that reflect its owner’s unique sensibility.
“I work from home, so I wanted to create something completely personal and comfortable,” Emma Chamberlain tells Architectural Digest. “I brought in references from many decades and design eras, and I tried to meld them into something that feels not only cohesive but new. It wasn’t about following the rules or sticking to one aesthetic. I tried to approach it all with a lightheartedness and an open mind.”
Working with the existing house — a 1955 cedar shingle-clad structure — Chamberlain, Drost, and Trohman leaned into an earthy, almost summer camp aesthetic for the interiors. Natural materials and finishes with an elevated touch are prioritised, with raw copper details; free-form plaster around the fireplace; walls and ceilings lined in cork tiles; banana-tree bark forming a textured wall covering; and sinks, walls, and furniture featuring different shades of onyx accenting the exposed wooden beams and high ceilings.
Meanwhile, Chamberlain’s quirky selection of décor and furnishings was curated with the help of mood boards. “I’m a mood board type of girl. I scoured every corner on the internet, every weird, deep hole on Pinterest,” she explains to Architectural Digest. “I find inspiration for the home everywhere, the same as fashion. It’s all one in my mind.”
Décor highlights include an Ettore Sottsass Ultrafragola mirror — a veritable 1970s design icon — as well as a striking Trueing Studio chandelier, custom rainbow onyx cocktail table, vintage Milo Baughman chaise, and paintings by Emma’s father, Michael Chamberlain.
Like fellow Los Angeles cool girl, actress Dakota Johnson, a green kitchen serves as a soothing oasis within the home. Bathed in calming tones of pale green and accented with swirled stone and copper hardware, it eschews the oft-favoured open-plan layout in favour of a closed-off yet generous kitchen that places cooking at its heart.
“I don’t really care if people don’t like it,” Chamberlain says of her home. “I’m the one who lives here, so I have to love it. And I do.”
